Purdue Students on 5 Hours w/ Kirk

Each year Professor Feinberg, of Purdue University, invites Kirk Weisler in to speak to his nearly 300 students for 5 HOURS about leadership.  The majority of the students approach this evening with dread, thinking “a FIVE HOUR lecture…UGGGH!”…but they leave this 5 hours inspired, changed, and excited for their future journey as leaders.  Every year nearly 1/3rd of the students are so grateful for the experience they feel compelled to write Kirk a personal note of appreciation.  What follows are their unsolicited words… we invite you to read them with this question in mind.

If Kirk could do this for students, many of whom came in tired, burned out, cynical about the evening & life and opening thinking it was going to stink…. and the left re-freshed, re-focused, and re-committed to a personal vision of becoming the best leader they could be.  Then what can Kirk do for your organization, team, or department?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Mr. Weisler,
I want to thank you for coming in to speak on Monday.  It was probably the best 5 hours I’ve ever spent in a classroom.  I really appreciate all of the good advice that you gave us and the fact that you care enough to share it with the world.  You have inspired me to better myself by becoming more engaged in my life.  I have decided to read all of those books you mentioned and then find some on my own.  I have recently been scared that I won’t find a job due to the economic crisis, but you have put at peace with your, “I believe the bar is so low….” speech.  The reason I say that is I am willing to learn I just didn’t realize that it was that easy to better myself.  I just wanted to let you know that appreciate what you do. Thank you again for coming because its really nice to know that someone cares.
Sincerely,
Jay Hutchinson
P.S. My grandpa sounds a lot like your dad.
Hi Mr. Weisler,
I just wanted to say thank you and let you know how inspirational your speech was.  I have never really been someone who read on a regular basis, but I’m going to start reading some of the books that you recommended.  You really made me realize how important reading and continuing to learn really is.  Again, thank you very much, I really enjoyed the presentation.
Kirk,
    I would like to thank your for speaking to our class last night. I also heard your 20 minute version at the CSR luncheon today. I truly enjoyed hearing your stories and theories on leadership. You are a great leader and we could all learn something from your presentation.
    Thanks again!
Dear Mr. Weisler,
Thank you for speaking to my CSR 309 class on Monday night.  I must admit I wasn’t looking forward to a five hour class, but to my surprise, at no point was I bored.  I’m looking forward to starting on my new reading list.  Thank you for inspiring me!
I just wanted to say thank you for taking the time and giving us your presentation. I really liked the idea of a note or small gift from time to time. I brought my roommates home a taco each after the workshop and I cant remember the last time they thanked me so much.
Mr. Weisler,
I am a senior in Dr. Feinberg’s class.  Thank you for your amazing presentation on Monday night.  Entering the room I was anticipating a run of the mill lecture, but I was wrong.  Your presentation was uplifting and inspiring.  I made several pages of notes of your key points that I thought I could apply to my life.  You should know that you are making a difference, if only with one person.  I admire how you mentioned how strong your faith was and noted that no one should be ashamed to talk about their faith.  Your originality and sincerity separate you from the pack.  Monday night made a real impact on my outlook on life.  It will make a profound impact from this point forward.  When I went outside on Tuesday morning, instead of yelling down the street like I normally do, I just got an old Walmart sack and picked up the neighbor’s dog poop from our yard.  I’m sure you receive plenty of emails with dog poop stories, but this example of an easy life change really resonated with me.
Thank you again,
Seth Lanman
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Kirk,
I’m somewhat skeptic that you will have a chance to read this.  I imagine that many people send you Thank You emails, and I also imagine many people from my class alone will. Regardless, I wanted to send you an email thanking you for coming to talk to our class.  I truly enjoyed it and you are (as I’m sure you’ve been told a thousand times) a great speaker and a very inspirational person.  It’s only been a day so I can’t comment that it’s changed my life, but it has definitely put me in the mindset to change my life.  I’ve lived most of my life with a chip on my shoulder.  Your speech helped me realize that there’s no reason to be cold when some of the greatest joys in life come from giving to others.  I wish I knew a pin lady to donate some pins to, but I think I will just have to keep my eyes open for people that need some light in their day around here.
You have something in your presentation that is just incredibly charismatic.  I haven’t quite pin pointed it yet, but it’s impressive.
I ran into you at the career fair today and yelled out “Kirk!” before I even processed what I was doing.  I guess I was just excited to see you up close ha ha.
I think the biggest thing I took away from your presentation, and I’ve been thinking about it ever since is, “We can either start making excuses, Or we can start making a difference.”
Hopefully you get a chance to read this.  I don’t necessarily expect a response, I know you’re a busy guy.
Thanks again for taking some time to talk to us, Kyle Ludeke
Dear Mr. Weisler,
     Thank you very much for coming and speaking to our class on Monday night.
I have never been to a function for five hours where I was listening and engaged almost the entire time. I would look at the clock and 40 minutes had gone by and it had felt like 10 minutes, usually the opposite is the case. You had many good lesson to learn and things to think about. I hope to always remember the story about giving people notes of appreciation. I believe it is the small things and acts of kindness that truly make a difference in the word, like the pin lady bringing joy into her job and the people around her.
If I may ask, I have two questions that I was too afraid to ask during the lecture. It is one of my weaknesses. First, what is your MBTI type, if you don’t mind sharing? Second, how would you recommend that someone finds their strengths and their mission and purpose for being here on earth?
Again thank you very much for taking your time to come and talk to our class.
Sincerely,   Paul Conley
Mr. Weisler,
Thank you for coming to Purdue and speaking to our CSR 309 class on Monday night. I enjoyed the real-life stories you shared with us about the “pin lady” at the airport and Laurie. Thank you for reminding us how much a simple note can mean to someone. I am looking forward to reading “QBQ” and “The Six Most Important Decisions You’ll Ever Make.”
Thanks again for coming.
Hi Kirk,
I want to thank you for taking the time to speak to us at Dr. Feinberg’s class and our Career Conference. I would also like to thank you for your generosity with the wonderful book that you and your brother produced..
Maybe this book can count towards my 2 books per year to distinguish myself
from the majority of the population? :)
i am just kidding, but I do plan on reading more because it is such a well-rounding experience. I aspire to reach the novel per month level and ultimately attain an international advisor level after the 84-month period. So we shall see what the future holds.
I hope that you and Brooklyn had a safe journey back to the home team. I will keep my eye out for the pen lady!
To prosperous futures, the Tyler Apaches, and being remarkable.
Sincerely,   Tammy Lee
Hello Kirk,
I’m a student in Dr. Feinberg’s CSR 309 class and I just want to thank you for taking the time to come speak with us Monday night at Purdue.  I took away some valuable pieces of information that night and I found your speech very inspirational.  Your story about the pin lady at the airport really stuck with me.  It made me realize that truly anyone can better the lives of others without much effort at all.
Hi Mr. Weisler, I just wanted to thank you for visiting Purdue and I hope you had a nice time here. It was a privilege to hear you speak and I normally do not enjoy reading, but the way you presented the books were so inspiring.
I also find it refreshing to hear that you were a bit lost on what you were going to do and yet you became successful. I know my outcome is up to me and how much effort and care I put into it, but it was still nice to receive some encouragement.
It was nice to here that Professor Feinberg has a big heart deep deep deep down inside him and hopefully I can expose it this semester. Thank you again for your presentation and I wish you the best. God bless.
Mr. Weisler,
I wanted to take the time to thank you for the outstanding Leadership Workshop you lead on February 9 at Purdue University.  I have always strived to be a good leader, but now I know how to be a great leader and I have you to thank for that.  What really amazed me was that it doesn’t take a grand gesture to gain respect from people.  It’s the simple things that add up over time, taking 2 seconds out of your day to ask how someone’s day is, to do something special for someone else, to care.  That’s what matters.  I’m glad to see there are people out there doing these simple things too.  I felt so refreshed after hearing your presentation and feel much more confident about my ability as a leader. Once again thank you, Mr. Weisler, for sharing with us your immense knowledge and passion for leadership. I wish you the best as you continue to change the lives of those you speak to.
Best Regards,
Hi Mr. Weisler,
I just wanted to thank you for taking time out of your schedule to come talk to our CSR 309 class yesterday. I know it was a great time commitment along with having to travel to Purdue. You have some very valuable points about leadership and taking the initiative, which as a graduating senior are very beneficial. You definitely set a high standard of living and I could tell that you truly care about other people and do extraordinary things for others. Your stories proved this. Dear Kirk,
I was at the workshop last night for Dr. Feinberg’s class and I just wanted to thank you for not only coming but inspiring me to do what I have always known was best to do. I have always MEANT to read but some how never found or allowed time for it. I have read a several books since high school but they were more amusing than helpful and I believe it was a great start but have never gotten the motivation to challenge myself further. After I left your presentation, even today, and most likely for as long as I will remember, I have already tried to spread the “green vibe” around to those less fortunate to have missed your lecture. I actually heard about your book a while back this year and recognized it when it was on the cork handed to me, but never did I think I would be in your presence. Your lecture, on top of Dr. Feinberg’s class, may have only been the start to my last semester here but it is definitely shaping me into a person I have always wanted to let out but felt a little hesitant to do so. So, I would just like to Thank You for taking time out of your day and your family’s night to talk to a bunch of college students who felt like we already knew what life was about. You put us in our place, that’s for sure. I enjoyed your lecture and I hope to have the pleasure of seeing you again!
Mr. Weisler,
Good-day mate, my name is Peter Bullard.  I wanted to e-thank-you for the ticks you spent with us last night during Feinbergs leadership conference.  Before the presentation yesterday, I was trying to rationalize how sensible 180,000 ticks of time would be spent with us.  Once the ball got rolling though, I really apprehended some of the things you had to say, and commended the way you could explain a crossroads someone is having easily by putting it into a story (i.e. your book) or by re-explaining the way you could and should look at a given situation.
Some of the things I really liked about the presentation was the “feet have to have mouths” comment, and also your dealings of “leaders being readers” and the realization (which I have also had) of the bar being set so low.  I myself pretty much got my first retail job by doing the exact things you suggested kids do when applying for a retail job in HS.  Finding the manager of the hardware store, going up to him being 15 years old, shaking his hand confidently, discussing my experience growing up on a farm and the distinguishing traits I would be bringing to the job, thanking him, and then handing him my resume.  Needless to say he was blown away and I became the youngest employee working there (Next youngest was 29).  It seems as you can really help people parallel what is going on in everyone’s head, and how to turn those thoughts into active engaging experiences.
It seems as if you have a lovely life, and enjoy doing what you do with great passion.  Thanks again for stopping by the Due.
Sincerely,  Peter Bullard
I really enjoyed listening to what you had to say and I hope to get the chance to read the books you suggested. In another class we actually had a speaker from Aerotek come and talk to us and he suggested two of the books on that list, and I have already read the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People for another class. Dear Mr. Weisler,
I wanted to thank you for coming to speak to our class Monday night and sharing your wisdom and insight with us all.  So many things you were saying hit home with exactly how I feel and I wish that more people could hear the insight you have to not only being a more productive human being, but overall just bettering themselves as a person and living the best life they possibly can. I went through a life changing year last year living in New York City and I adopted a mentality that every day it was my goal to make someone else’s day and that if I was ever asked to do anything, to drop what I was doing for myself and have a servants heart and do for others above myself. As these thoughts became actions and actions became habits, I found myself with opportunities that were undeniably blessings from giving to others first. I feel lucky to have had the opportunity and open mindedness to hear what God was telling me when I was relatively young and I hope the same for all of my peers and everyone I come across because it makes life so much more refreshing. Thank you again for all that you shared with us and good luck with all of your future endeavors and those you whom you will change their life :)
Sincerely,  Whitney Melhorn
Kirk,
 Your seminar was FIVE hours… during that five hours I believe you reached every single student in that room. I personally try to live my life in many ways you explained, and to me it was a huge reminder on what I can do better on a day to day basis and long term goals. My favorite part about your seminar was that you never told anyone how to act or what they should do you taught everyone through stories. My english teachers throughout schooling have said “don’t tell, show!!!” You did a perfect job of this. I do have a question for you, I would like to know if you have ever read the book The Secret and if you were inspired by it in any way? Again, it was NOT motivating but VERY inspirational and cannot thank you enough for pumping that back into my blood after a long day of school!
Dear Weisler,
Thank you for giving us a pleasant evening with the best and most helpful speech on Monday. It was inspiring and had made me think a lot about myself.   There were times when my parents told me I need to know that real society isn’t as wonderful as I thought (when I was 17), and times when I don’t know who to trust and who I need to keep distance from. Coming to college has taught me a lot about social interacting and how to be myself again. I can’t say I’ve found all the answers to my questions and problems, but I know I have grown so much which is even more precious and important that what we can learn from school. Your speech gave me even more courage and confidence to face things that I’ve been avoiding and not wanting to deal with.
Just want to let you know how I appreciate your 5 hour inspiring speech. I remember when I walked up to you and had the hand shake, and you told me I had a pretty smile. You’ve taught me that giving complimenting to others is for free but the impact for that person can be great. You really put your words into action as a teacher and leader. I learned a lot. Thank you.
Sincerely,
Jennifer Hou
Dear Mr. Weisler,
Thank you very much for taking the time to come and speak to our leadership class.  It honestly didn’t even feel like five hours at all! (seriously)  Your daughter is absolutely adorable, I love the name Brooklyn for a little girl.
There were a lot of valuable things I took away from your lecture.  I thoroughly enjoyed the stories you told, in particular the ones about the coffee lady and the pin lady.  It just goes to show how far little acts of kindness can go.  It be nice to be the person that when your name is mentioned it brings a smile to others’ faces.
Thank you for all the book suggestions, I plan on reading a good amount of them.  Actually I have a few book recommendations for you, “The Last Lecture” I know you’ve probably heard of it, and maybe have already even read it.  It is definitely one that has a big impact on the reader.  Also, there is a book called “Found” it’s just a compilation of lost notes, pictures, stories that people sent to this man and he made into a book.  It’s amazing what people write down, and that these things didn’t end up going to their intended person.  Lastly, a book called “The Post Secret” a man started it as an art project and gave postcards to people on the street in New York City.  He told them to write down a secret and send it to them.  He was flooded with responses, some funny others awfully
sad.  It amazes me that people carry around these secrets as burdens.  The author is Frank Warren, and he actually travels around now and speaks.  Granted these don’t necessarily relate fully to leadership they are just books I find interesting when dealing with human nature.  Well anyway, thank you again for taking the time to come and speak at Purdue.  Good luck to you in your future endeavors.
Sincerely,
Tracey Vaughan
Hi my name is Sarah Keeker I am a student in Professor Feinberg’s CSR 309 class and I just wanted to thank you for coming to present to us on Monday. I was truly inspired by the things you said. I particularly have a tendency to listen to others even when they may be negative. You really inspired me to be positive and surround myself with other people that are of the same mindset. I really appreciated your message and I think you inspired us all to be better. We have a tendency to get caught up in the monotony of college life doing the same thing every day and we forget to live everyday to it’s fullest. Kirk,
Hello! My name is Donna Samburg and I had the opportunity to attend your presentation at Purdue University on Monday night. I just wanted to thank you for taking the time to speak with our class. I know that you touched and inspired many students, as well as myself during our 4 1/2 hours together.
I am the Vice President of Programming for my sorority, and the first thing I did when I walked in the doors to Delta Zeta, was grab a pad of post-it’s and write a short, thoughtful note of appreciation to one of the women I work with on a daily basis. The next morning, she sent me a wonderful text message thanking me for the note, and approached me a few hours later with excitement and enthusiasm about our next project.
As the VP of Programs, one of my responsibilities is to bring in speakers to address issues such as risk management, chapter history, self-assessment, and most important, leadership. Trying to inspire my peers to be leaders whether it’s inside of Delta Zeta or on Purdue’s campus, has proven difficult. I was wondering if there is any way you would be interested in coming and speaking to my chapter about leadership? You are an incredibly captivating speaker and I know that you could inspire my sisters. It would be sometime next year (August- December 2010). I am not sure if something of this nature could be arranged, but I would like to hear any information you may have for me.
Once again, thank you for inspiring me to be the best leader I can be. I will take your word’s and your list of books to read with me forever!
Sincerely,
Donna Samburg
I just wanted to thank you again for speaking to us and teaching us about leadership.  I came down and shook your hand after everything wrapped up and asked you if you have read “The Magic of Thinking Big.”  I loved that book and I will now read “As A Man Thinketh” like you recommended.  Your message that night was powerful, and I wanted to thank you for leaving a copy of your book for us.
 I would love to stay in contact with you and possibly meet up again whenever you are in or around the area.  I graduate from Purdue in May and have not made up my mind on what I would like to do yet.  A book I am currently reading and one I think you would also enjoy is “Personality Plus.”  Thanks again for everything, and I look forward to hearing from you soon.
