Committing to Drive Yourself
Sunday, January 30th, 2011
We are not our feelings. We are not our moods. We are not even our thoughts. We are a product of our commitments.
-Dr. Stephen R. Covey
I remember a few years ago reading something to the effect that psychologist should stop asking people how they feel, and start asking them “What are you thinking that makes you feel that way.”
My wife said something similar to this effect… “Love is not a feeling that overcomes us, and that we are victims too. Rather it is a choice we make…and a commitment we can keep.”
This stands in stark contrast to the popular philosophy that we are victims to our emotions. A philosophy that would have us believe that “love is something we fall into and out of” or that we victims to others people’s behaviors and unable to choose our own responses. This can sound like… ”He makes me so mad.” or .. ”That person drives me crazy” .
We must not allow ourselves to believe we are driven by others…and instead choose to drive ourselves.
In the end we are all products of our choices and our commitments. So let us choose wisely….and commit fully.
