Greenleaf Speaks
“A new moral principle is emerging which holds that the only authority deserving one’s allegiance is that which is freely and knowingly granted by the led to the leader in response to, and in proportion to, the clearly evident servant stature of the leader. Those who choose to follow this principle will not casually accept the authority of existing institutions. Rather, they will freely respond only to Individuals who are chosen as leaders because they are proven and trusted servants. To the extent that this principle prevails in the future, the only truly viable institutions will be those that are predominantly servant-led.” ~ Robert K. Greenleaf

“Those who choose to follow this principle will not casually accept the authority of existing institutions. ” - There is nothing casual about accepting the authority of existing institutions. Institutions, big and small, are instituted and allowed to exit by God. What belongs to us is submission to these institutions and to the authority instituted thereof, and there is nothing casual about that. God appoints people in two categories: leaders and followers. And He will deal equally and objectivelly with both categories. I think that Robert had a very good principle in that paragraph, but the way he exposed it kind of negated the whole point. Just my two cents…..

Great piece, great message. I’d just question exactly how ‘new’ this principle is though… I’d say it’s been around for … oh… about 2000 years.
