I agree 100% - writing things down DOES make a difference. For the past 3 years I have been writing down a list (my husband jokes about my lists) of things to accomplish around the house, things like painting the living room, installing a new light fixture in the dining room, etc. Throughout the year I go back and check the list, and we've usually accomplished something from the list without even trying! By the end of the year, we've usually done at least 80% of what's on the list. The things we haven't accomplished usually haven't been done because of financial reasons.
